While growing up in Charleston, George Durst spent time at his grandfather’s house on Sullivan’s Island, where they kept a Sunfish and small day sailor on the beach.  Eventually he and his brother, Peter, bought a Boston Whaler Harpoon 5.2 and would launch it at the boat ramp and sail in Charleston Harbor.

George and Peter Durst opened a North Sails loft in South Carolina in 1994. A dinghy sailor at heart, George focuses largely on local one design (Escows, Melges 24s) as well as PHRF and IRC racing.

George’s Top 5 Sailing Accomplishments Include:
1)Sailing on Challenge America, a former Whitbread IOR MAXI in the Fastnet  Race, Maxi Worlds, Pineapple cup, and the Daytona to Bermuda Race.
2)Setting the Charleston to Bermuda Record on Grins Andrews 68 in (year).
3)1st in class at Key West Race Week on J/120 Emocean.
4)Winning the S.A.Y.R.A and N.C.Y.R.A  Offshore Championships on Beneteau 10m GO.
5)Putting together the Jubilee Crew for Cal Huge, on five boats ranging from J105’s to an Archambeau 40RC.

When he is not sailing, George spends time with his wife Margaret and daughter Britton, whether boating to the beaches and up the creeks, going to the mountains to hike and ski, or taking hunting trips as a family and watching NASCAR on the weekends.
