Bruce Stone and crew aboard the J/105 Power Play won the 2009 J/105 North American Championship, hosted by the American Yacht Club in Rye, NY, from October 29-November 1. Powered by a full North Sails inventory, Stone held off the 29-boat fleet to win by nine points.Power Play is owned by Scott DeWeese of Wakefield, RI, who campaigned Power Play together with Bruce this year. Aside from the North Americans, their successes included winning both Rolex Block Island Race Week and the Buzzards Bay Regatta, while finishing second at the Coastal Living Newport Regatta.
“We had great teamwork onboard and maneuvered well all weekend,” said Stone, who sailed in over 25 regattas in 2009, both on the East Coast with Power Play and on the West Coast with his J/105 Arbitrage, finishing second in this year’s St. Francis YC Rolex Big Boat Series. “At the NA’s we sailed with crew from both boats and were staffed with two highly qualified bowmen and two great tacticians, who split the normal role so one could focus on wind and the other on making the boat go fast,” explains Stone. “It was an interesting division of responsibility and clearly it kept us ahead of our competition.”
Mainsail trimmer Nicole Breault believes that Stone’s North American inventory - a new North Class Sail Development (CSD) mainsail (Dacron, per J/105 class rules), CJ-1 jib and V-Force Class Asymmetric spinnaker – were a big part of their boat speed. “We had windy, puffy conditions throughout the regatta and the sails set beautifully,” said Breault. “We had a speed edge when it was windy and our boat speed overall was a major factor.”
Team Power Play dominated the third day of racing (Saturday) with three bullets and led the fleet wire-to-wire for all three races. “We worked the wind shifts a lot and got off the line very well after the first day,” added Stone. “The teamwork onboard was huge and our sails were great,” he concluded.
North Sails would like to congratulate Stone and his J/105 crew for a very successful season and wish him much luck during 2010.
