© Annapolis Sailing FitnessAfter training athletes for the past 20 years from age 8 to 96, I’ve seen just about every training style and all of the variations of exercises. We have many ways to group the routines whether it is push/pull, plyometrics, circuit ,super sets and so on. Many young athletes are still looking for the magic pill for success and trying to find short cuts.
There are no short cuts! Its all about discipline, hard work and consistency.
Supplements are available and new ideas on the old school methods exist yet mastery of the basics is where it starts and stops. We need to have variety and keep things fresh yet with all of the catchy names that we have for warming up, exercises and the like, it seems like we need a master’s degree to simple hit the gym and practice proper technique.
Whenever you do come across exercises that have a unique name or description, use Google or web sites such as www.myfit.ca to help explain form and function. Practice the basics such as how to group the exercises to prevent over training. Never work the same muscle groups two days in a row. Always warm up first. You can do this many ways whether it’s Dynamic stretching, getting on a bike for 5 minutes or other safe and effective means. Let’s stop spending 3 hours in a gym and have some balance. The formulas for success with lifting are simple. We need to stop getting in the way of our progress and risk injury and burnout.
In our DVD, Sailing fitness, Opti’s to The America’s Cup, we have put together an entire collection of exercises demonstrating form and technique. Many of the exercises which are shown for a Grinder for example can cross over to the Mast Man or even Dinghy sailors. This DVD is the first of its kind and can hopefully guide you to develop your own routine which can be expanded and practiced in a safe and fun way. This DVD is now available in the North Sails gear site.
